MY BEST FRIEND IS EXTINCT PRESENTATION (GRADES 4 & UP )

My middle grade novel is about ten-year-old Henry Springs who discovers a strange creature that is seriously injured. While he nurses him back to health he discovers the creature is not the only unusual beast lurking in the neighbourhood. This is a story about friendship, bullying, finding your true self, and discovering animals believed to be extinct. Using a Powerpoint presentation, I describe where my ideas originated, and how pre-historic creatures like the short-faced bear and sabre-tooth tiger roamed our lands a mere 10,000 years ago. I describe my creative writing methods, how the book evolved, and the editing process through multiple drafts with my writers group, editor and illustrator. The presentation includes a reading, activities, a question and answer period and a book signing. The duration is approximately 50-60 minutes.

WORLDBUILDING CREATIVE WRITING WORKSHOP (ALL AGES )

Join me for a 60 minute writing workshop on how to build an invented world. I draw on examples from my middle-grade novel My Best Friend is Extinct, featuring pre-historic creatures like the short-faced bear and sabre-tooth tiger that roamed our lands a mere 10,000 years ago. I talk about where ideas come from, how to world-build, and discuss some of the rules of world-building. Bring a pen and paper or a keyboard and get ready to brainstorm fantastical creatures, one big fib, and a little bit of weirdness in a short writing exercise during the workshop. The duration is approximately 60 minutes.

FEEDBACK

“We’ve had the pleasure of hosting Rebecca and her Write It, Read It Camp each summer for seven years. This three-day camp takes place as part of our Summer Reading Club programming, and includes two age groups: students going into grades 5, 6, and 7; and students going into high school. Rebecca does an incredible job of engaging the participants; while most of the kids are already passionate about reading and writing, Rebecca is also able to coax the more reluctant writers out of their shells. Her creativity, imagination, and enthusiasm guarantee that the ‘campers’ always have a great time.”
