STORYTELLING THROUGH TIME: INTO THE FAR OUT FUTURE

Are you ready to take a leap into the future? In this creative writing class we’ll write futuristic  stories that imagine alternative worlds. We’ll talk about why your story’s rules need to be consistent, even while you create places that depart from reality. You’ll learn how to blend in worldbuilding details, without adding too much. This is your chance to stretch your imagination while writing unforgettable characters who live in an invented future! Grades: 4-7

STORYTELLING THROUGH TIME: TRAVEL INTO THE PAST

In this creative writing adventure, you’ll invent your own time-travel story that goes back into the past. We’ll talk about different types of time-travel stories and the paradox of changing the past to affect the future. Together we’ll brainstorm unique time-travel portals, vehicles, and time-jumper methods. You’ll figure out how to choose a time period and create the rules for your time-bending story. Grades: 4-7

INVENTING THE OPPOSITE: A CREATIVE WRITING WORKSHOP

Have you ever been so surprised by a book or character you wondered, ‘how did the writer think of that?’ Join author Rebecca Wood Barrett in a creative writing workshop to learn a step-by-step process of how to invent fresh and extraordinary ideas and characters. She’ll share some of her secrets of exploring her own life to come up with fun and unusual ideas and teach you how to do the same thing. Come prepared to boost your brain and move your pen across the paper! Ages: 8-12

YOUNG WRITERS WORKSHOP: WORLDBUILDING

April 8th, 2021 | 4:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. PDT | FREE (RSVP)

Join Rebecca Wood Barrett for a one-hour writing workshop on how to build an invented world.  Drawing on examples from her middle-grade novel My Best Friend is Extinct, she talks about where ideas come from, how to world-build, and some of the rules of world-building. Bring a pen and paper or a keyboard and get ready to brainstorm fantastical creatures, one big fib, and a little bit of weirdness in a short writing exercise during the workshop. For writers 19 and under.
